Hello University of Scouting Student!

The UNPC 2013 University of Scouting is happening in just about a week and we hope you are EXCITED for this awesome council event! There are 30+ content-rich classes taught by 34 faculty instructors that will make your job easier and enhance your program with your Scouts & Venturers & Districts. It’s going to be an awesome day!

Occasionally, temperatures may vary at the church, so maybe bring a jacket. Be sure to wear your field uniform and don’t forget to bring your hearty Scout Spirit!  Registration will begin at 7:45am and the Opening Ceremony is at 8:30am. Please be on time for the start as we will go right into the Keynote Speaker session with Mark Griffin from National BSA. Enjoy some top-notch classes at University of Scouting! If you have any questions, stop by the registration desk . . . we’re happy to help.

NEW CLASS: INTRODUCTION TO CANYONEERING

During the last session of the day, Shane Holst will be sharing some great information about Canyoneering and will explore common misunderstandings regarding descending technical slot canyons.  Shane will discuss essential gear, trip planning resources and introduce several canyoneering specific skills to help scout leaders recognize the need for additional training. Respond to this email if you are interested in attending.

If you haven’t heard already, we have some AMAZING PRIZES and GIVEAWAYS!! 2. Bring a friend – bring another scouter that is not registered as of today 1/30/2012. For each friend that registers for the UoS, please send me (Kent) an email and let me know who your friend is, and you will both receive two additional drawing tickets for our prize drawing giveaways!

LATE REGISTRATION AND WALK-INS

Registration will remain open until the day of the event, and we will accommodate walk-ins as we can based on room sizes and class availability. Walk-ins will not be guaranteed a lunch or a UoS patch.

LUNCH – DID YOU ORDER?

We have noticed that there are many of you that did not order lunch when you registered. If you meant to order a lunch and did not, then please modify your registration and include what you would like. You can choose from three types of sandwiches or a garden salad. If you have problems modifying your registration, then please email me (Kent) your choice for lunch. We need this asap (by 2/4). Thank you.

SCOUT SHOP & MIDWAY

There will be a SCOUT SHOP with a few items to choose from at the UoS. Also, don’t miss the MIDWAY where you can find out more from various vendors, organizations, and upcoming training like EDGE and Wood Badge, and you can demo some really cool products you’re going to want!

CLOSING CEREMONY

After the great classes at UoS, our closing will begin at 1:15pm. David Pack, Council Executive, will be sharing a few words, and then we will have some Grand Prize Drawings & Winners!

UoS SWAG BAGS

After the closing, turn in your UoS Evaluation sheet and we will hand you the official UoS Swag Bag with some great goodies in it, including the UoS Patch, and much more. Visit the registration table on your way out to turn in your eval sheet and to receive your UoS “party favors” swag bag!

2013 Feb 3 4:00 PM Pack Committee Meeting

Here is your reminder we are meeting a week early to plan the details of the Blue and Gold Banquet.  This will replace the normal pack meeting for February.  We will meet at our house, Bingham's at 4 pm Feb. 3rd, next Sunday.  Jake and I will be home for the meeting put will be traveling back from a quick family trip so we won't be to church.

 

To help get your minds rolling and thinking about this on the back burner...

-Theme: Survivor, month theme:  resourcefulness

-Feb 26th 6-7:30pm

-Will be having greeters, flag ceremony/prayers, dinner, awards, NO skit, No assigned refreshments

-Bears will be doing the invitations, remind families to bring a side i.e. Green Salad, jello, fruit, vegetable etc...

-We, Cub scout leaders, will make Kahlua Pork, Rice, provide 'dirt cups' for dessert, probable lemonade from Costco

-We, Cub scout leaders, will come early to set up tables, chairs, set up food, decor, etc...

-Decor- stuffed animals, fake trees, any one's house plants, pop-up tent, sleeping bag, etc... ***We will probable assign this out to have someone gather this all up from all of us and set it up

 

Sister Beeson and Brother Simons have the prayers at our Committee mtg next Sunday.

WAHOO   Varsity Leaders,   We are having a 100 year celebration of BSA/LDS relation encampment called WAHOO on June 6-8, 2013 at Beaver High Adventure Base. This would be a Thursday , Friday, Saturday event. Thursday show up and service with a campfire program that evening. Friday and Saturday morning would be full of a variety of events for youth and adults to participate in. Friday evening would have a LDS centered program with a keynote speaker and a member of the YM presidency or board to speak with us. We need staff members to help run events and come up with some ideas of events as well. If you are interested in participating please let me know at kevgold1@yahoo.com or 801-717-7169. Varsity ON TARGET Saturday, July 20, 2013

Devoted scouters,

 

We are ramping up for a wonderful ON TARGET event on Saturday, July 20.  I just received word that Brother Winn Egan, a member of the Young Men General Board, will be participating in our event.  He will be with us at the Mount Timpanogos Temple, and he will deliver a "training item" to all the Young Men and scouters on the peak via ham radio and telephone bridge.  This will be a wonderful opportunity for our boys and leaders to hear from a great brother serving in the leading councils of the church.

 

As you are probably aware, the year 2013 will mark the 100-year anniversary of the close affiliation between the Boys Scouts of America and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  We want to commemorate this wonderful centennial event by having a special "Temple To Peak" On Target activity.  We plan to have an enthusiastic group of scouts and dignitaries at as many temples as possible in the western United States, along with excited scout units on the mountains surrounding these temples.  We are encouraging leaders and scouts to pick a peak from which they can see at least one temple, and then to dedicate ample time to make a great mirror contact and ham radio contact with the group (or groups) at the temple site (or sites).  I live in Provo, and Utah County is going to be my focus.  I am hoping that John Blackham will take charge of the Salt Lake valley temple sites, and that other leaders will volunteer to supervise activity in Ogden, Brigham City, St. George, Las Vegas, Arizona, and the southern California area.  I will be happy to register units on our website at www.ldsfacts.net/ontarget.htm . 

 

Now, some specifics concerning our Utah Valley event.  I am in the process of recruiting some wonderful church leaders to coordinate events at the four temple sites in Utah County -- Provo Temple, Mt. Timpanogos Temple, the Provo City Center Temple construction site, and the Payson Temple construction site.  We will have experienced On Target leaders and hams at each of the four sites to receive and send signals.  We hope to have church and scouting dignitaries at each site.  We know from past experience that it is not permissible for us to be located on the actual temple grounds, so we will set up our signaling stations "near" the temples.  For example, there is a huge soccer field immediately west of the Provo Temple, and that will be a wonderful site for our signaling.  There is a stake center just north of the Mount Timpanogos temple with an attached pavilion, and that will make a great site as well.

 

What great conversation will be possible concerning the link between scouting and the church, the symbolism of reflecting light into the lives of others, the thrill of climbing mountains and achieving great goals, the "spiritual light" that emanates from our temples, and many other topics.  I personally am going to climb a mountain that looks down on both Utah County and Salt Lake County, maximizing the number of temple sites that our scouts can signal.

 

Thus far, we have ham radio operators assigned to Mount Timpanogos Temple, Provo Temple, and the Provo City Center Temple.  I need a great ham to volunteer to help at the Payson Temple site.  I have a scout unit signed up for the Provo City Center site, but still need three units to volunteer for Provo, Mt. Timpanogos, and Payson.  The unit at the Mt. Timpanogos site will get to meet Brother Winn Egan, and also Andy Gibbons, the UNPC Varsity Scout Chairman.  If this sounds exciting to you, please contact me at mdtaylormd@gmail.com.  First come, first served.

Deacons/Troop - Strategy Games

Parents,

This Wednesday we are starting a segment on Strategy Games. We will start with the Chess merit badge this Wednesday and over the coming weeks will be playing some strategy board games and participate in a multi-player video game activity. 

We've chosen an X-box game rated E, a paintball shooting game. Let Ben Hodson or myself know if you have any objections to this.  This is planned for Wednesday February 13. We will try to have up to 16 players simultaneously playing the same game. The purpose is to foster teamwork, learn to work in teams, taking roles and assignments to accomplish the game objective. We'll likewise do this with board games on Jan 30. 

We've recently completed the Welding merit badge and are planning a Court of Honor for Feb. 27. Since fall we've completed Orienteering, Golf, Welding and will have Chess complete. I have lists of all Scouts who completed these badges except for Golf. Please, ask your Scout if he participated in both of our Golf outings, and let me know. If so, he will earn the badge.

Varsity Scout Leaders Monthly Memo

Thank you to the 3rd, 11th and 8th wards who have already RSVP'd for our stake's Varsity Vision over-nighter.  If you missed my other email, this is a special course that is mainly for units in our stake (although we'll probably have others there).  The objective of the course is to train your Varsity Team (youth and adults) on the Varsity program while having fun at the same time.  It's a great way to get everyone in your unit on the same page.  The course will be held on April 26-27.  The cost is $10 per participant (youth and adults) and includes all food.  For those that have not yet responded, please let me know if your Team/Quorum is planning on attending.

Time: 6:00 PM departing from church and returning on Saturday at around 2:00 PM

Preparation: 

• Come dressed for winter weather gear for snow shoeing, cross-country skiing, and sledding.
• Have dinner before you leave on Friday and bring snacks for that night.
• You can bring your own breakfast.  The cabin like your house has amenities to cook your breakfast.
• Games and spiritual activities are planned.

Varsity Lego League Service Project

Hello Varsity Scouts & Parents,

LEGO LEAGUE SERVICE PROJECT

We have an all Saturday service project from 7AM – 3:00PM on January 12^th (this Saturday).  The Varsity Scouts will actually be judging Lego robots and battles at a regional qualifier of the Utah Lego League.  THIS IS OUR MAJOR SERVICE PROJECT FOR THE QUARTER, and we would like all to come.  The location of the event is the Cedar Hills Golf Club, and we will meet at Brother Smith’s house at 6:30AM for Donuts and Hot Chocolate to get us going!  I am thinking Daylight Donuts…oh yeah!

If you have basketball games, etc, we will make arrangements so you can go and come back.  You will also be trained in what you need to do, and get a free shirt! Woohoo!

2013 Cub Scout Leaders Monthly Schedule

Hey All Cub Scout Leaders,

Hope everyone had a relaxing Christmas and New Year!

It's time to get back to scouting, so here's the information that we have for you:

• Round table is now on the second Thursday of each month, 7-8:30 pm at 10962 N. 6400 W. Highland  Click here for google map location
• Pack Committee Meeting is next Sunday, at 4 pm at our house.  It's a time change due to the church meeting time change.
• Come prepared to talk about Blue and Gold Banquet, which is in February.

• Bears and Webelos are still at 6 on Wednesdays.

Here are some ideas to help simplify planning for your next winter campout. These were shared in the recent Varsity Huddle.

8 simple tips for a comfortable winter camp

1. Preparation (mental and physical) for boys and adult leaders.
2. Burn calories to stay warm—eat lots of calories.
3. Closed-cell foam pad for sleeping, standing, sitting, etc.
4. Hot water bottles at night in sleeping bag (Nalgene work best).
5. Layer clothing – bring a complete change of clothing (especially with snow caves).
6. Bring an extra sleeping bag, tarp, or blanket for extra warmth.
7. Sleep with a Beanie.
8. When building snow caves – take two days to build them.
